Out-patient medical care

DEFINITIONS

Region - a territorial division in regions according to the Regulation (EC) No 1059/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 May 2003 on the establishment of a common classification of territorial units for statistics (NUTS). NUTS classification is a hierarchical system for dividing up the economic territory of the EU for the purpose of the collection, development and harmonisation of EU regional statistics; socio-economic analyses of the regions (NUTS 1: major socio-economic regions, NUTS 2: basic regions for the application of regional policies, NUTS 3: as small regions for specific diagnoses); framing of EU regional policies. NUTS 3 applied in this yearbook. An out-patient visit - an episode of examination or consultation by a medical person (a medical doctor, a doctor's assistant, a midwife, a nurse) at:
    - the out-patient care establishment;
    - patient's home;
    - the out-patient ward of the inpatient care establishment;
    - the reception ward of the in-patient care establishment, if the patient wasn't admitted to the hospital.

The number of out-patient visits excludes:
   - telephone consultations;
   - prescribed examinations (laboratory tests, functional diagnostics, radiology examinations etc.);
   - prescribed treatment procedures (injections, physical therapy etc.);
    - visits to the dentist.

Day-hospital patients - patients who need specialised observation of health status or healthcare services from the hospital. The patients occupy specialised day-hospital beds during a limited number of hours of the day and return home for the night. Day-hospital patient care is one of the forms of outpatient care.

Outpatient surgical operations - all surgical operations performed for outpatients, including those admitted at the day-hospitals.

An out-patient visit to the dentist - one case of treatment or consultation with a dentist at the out-patient care establishment.
