Number of injury and poisoning cases

DEFINITIONS

ICD-10 code – diagnosis related to trauma, injury and poisoning coded according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision. Data on patients with registered diagnosis code S00-T78 (according to SSK-10).

Number of injury and poisoning cases- the number of injury and poisoning cases recorded in a given year with a specific injury or poisoning diagnosis (S00.0 - T78.9,according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision). One patient can be registered several times during a given year.

Number of injury and poisoning cases by gender and age per 100,000 population – the number of injury and poisoning cases of the particular gender and age of patients registered in the Register at the end of the year, divided by the population of the respective sex and age at the end of the particular year and multiplied by 100,000.

Type of injury- type of injury is coded according to the Injury Database Coding Manual. The number of registered injury types may be higher than the number of registered injuries within a certain period of time, as up to two different types of injury can be registered for single patient.

Intent of injury and poisoning cases - intent is coded according to the Injury Database Coding Manual. It provides information on the intent of the person's injury, such as unintentional injury, violence, intentional self-harm, etc.

Percentage of intent (%) - proportion of the intent from total registered injury cases.

Place of occurrence- place of occurrence is coded according to the Injury Database Coding Guide. It provides information about the place where the injured person was located when injury happened, such as a home, a transport area, etc.

Proportion of place of occurrence (%) - proportion of a particular place of occurrence from the total number of registered injuries.

Victims of violence - the number of persons who have been injured during violence or aggression.

The number of victims of violence per 100,000 population- the number of victims of violence in a given year is calculated on the average population of Latvia in a given year, multiplied by 100,000.

The number of victims of violence by gender and age per 100,000 population - the number of victims of the respective gender and age in a given year is calculated on the average of the respective sex and age population in a given year and multiplied by 100,000

Victims of violence - the number of persons who have been injured during violence or aggression.

Victims’ relationship with perpetrator- victims’ relationship with perpetrator is coded according to the Injury Database Coding Guide. It provides information on the relationship of the person who caused the physical injury to the patient, such as a spouse, parent, stranger, etc.

Injury mechanism- coded according to the Injury Database Coding Guide. It provides information on how a person was injured, such as stumbling, cutting, burning, etc.

Proportion of injury mechanism in age groups (%) - proportion of particular injury mechanism by age groups.

Number of cases of poisoning - number of registered cases of poisoning in which type of injury is coded as Poisoning by chemical or other substance, according to the Injury Database Coding Manual.

Poisoning causing group of substances- the substance that caused patient to be poisoned. The number of substances registered may be higher than the number of registered poisoning cases, as up to three different poisoning substances can be registered per case.

Substance groups:

Insects, invertebrates, reptiles or amphibians: according to the Injury Database Coding Guide, this group includes bees, wasps, snakes, scorpions, etc.

Smoke: according to the Injury Database Coding Manual, carbon monoxide and motor vehicle exhaust gas are excluded from this substance group.

Other non-pharmaceutical chemical substances: according to the Injury Database Coding Manual, this group includes: glue, fuel, solvents, paint, veterinary products, pesticides, cleaning agents, corrosive chemicals (including vinegar and vinegar essence), other specified non-pharmaceutical chemical substances (including carbon monoxide, motor vehicle exhaust gas, etc.

Data in Register is collected in online information system.

The Register is updated based on information provided by medical treatment institutions.

The Injury Database Coding Manual contains various data elements that can be used to describe in detail the case of injury or poisoning.
