Years of potential life lost

DEFINITIONS

Years of potential life lost– years a person would have lived if he or she had not prematurely died (e.g. till 64 (used threshold in Latvia) in an accident, due to illness or due to other cause. In an earlier age people die, the greater is number of years of potential life lost.

METHODOLOGY

Years of potential life lost (YPLL) calculation based on method of McDonnell (1998, USA). YPLL rate = Σ(64,5 – age of death) x number of deaths at each age x 100000/ number of people ages 64 and younger YPLL rates are calculated per 100000 of average number of inhabitants (relevant age, gender) at defined time period.
